We’d like to tell you a bit of our history. As early as 1906, the Havre newspapers wrote of the need to put in gardens. In 1922 a local garden club was formed as a branch of the then all-encompassing Women’s Club. The initial club asked for the designation of the Nasturtium as the official flower of the city. Forty years later, that flower lost out to the Petunia as the official flower of the city. It wasn’t until January of 1942 that a local garden club was officially organized under the name “Bullhook Blossoms”. It functioned until the late 1960’s (Bullhook was the unofficial name for the original settlement at the confluence of Bullhook Creek and the Milk River.) The current club was organized in 2009.
We hold our meetings at 2pm on the 4th Tuesday of the month, January through October, in the Timmons Conference Room on the lower level of the Hill County Courthouse unless otherwise noted. Our club has informational programs at each meeting, including tours of local gardens and green houses. We plant and maintain the planter at the library, maintain a public iris garden and the peonies at the county court house. We are involved with Turf, helping grade schoolers plant trees each spring. We participate in the annual Festival Days parade, and help local artists staff the Art in the Garden event.
This year Bullhook Blossoms Garden Club will be hosting the 2022 District #7 meeting in Havre on April 20th. We look forward to seeing old friends and meeting those who are new to us.
